This week’s task was to devise a performance text based on and/or around an art work which inspired us from the Usher Gallery or Collection museum. My performance text was based around the Victorian mourning jewellery and the Grandfather clocks I found in the Usher Gallery. I based my performance around the themes of life and death, whilst injecting the ideas of time and how it is never ending. The aim of the performance idea was to identify the concept of life over death, as death is inevitable and time still ticks by.
When watching other performances I found the range of ideas that were presented interesting. Every performance was completely different and ranged from using audio and projection to physical performances and movement. Two performance pieces that interested me were the audio performance based on the Jacob Epstein’s sculpture of Paul Robeson and the performance based on the armoured suit situated in the centre of the Collection Museum. I enjoyed the educational experience of both of these performances. It was obvious that extensive research went into the art works influence and the history which brought the art work to life. The idea of bringing in the history of Lincoln Castle into the second mentioned performance rather than the history the specific object was both authentic and informative. The concept generated realistic imagery through projection and physical performance, connecting the story of the infamous 1066 Battle of Hastings and the history of the City of Lincoln effectively.
